Route description

By bus

If you travel by bus, you should ask the bus driver to stop in Tonsupa, near the bridge, at the meeting point of the pedicabs (triciclos). This place or road is called "La entrada de Cabaplan". Here you take a pedicab (50 cents per person) and you ask for ViaVia Tonsupa, situated at two blocks from the beach. You can also take a look at the map (attachment 1).

By plane

You can get to Esmeraldas by plane from Quito and from Cali. At the airport of Esmeraldas you should look for a bus displaying “Casablanca”. This is a tourist resort situated to the south of Tonsupa. You then ask the driver if you can ride along until ViaVia Tonsupa and to be dropped off in front of the entrance. This will cost you 8 dollars.

By car

If you come from Quito, you should turn left right before you arrive in Esmeraldas, at "el Leon" (a small statue of a lion, you will see a fork here, Esmeraldas lies straight ahead, but you have to turn left to go to Atacames and Tonsupa). In Tonsupa you have to turn right about 100 metres before the bridge (this is called Entrada de Cabaplan). Turn right when you are two blocks from the beach. You will see the signboard from that point.

Travellers’ info

The rainy season runs from late December to late May. The dry season runs from June to the end of December. Temperatures are usually around 25-30 degrees. In 2010, a " fenomeno del Niño" took place, which means that the rainy season lasted much longer and that the rainfall was a lot heavier. This has been a complete disaster for the country and the region, as roads, bridges, houses, are slowly washing away.

Tonsupa is an important holiday destination for the Ecuadorians. During the holidays (carnival, Easter, national holidays, July-August, All Saints’ Day, Christmas, ...) it is very busy here and you have to watch out. You better not walk around with a camera or other luxury items and large sums of money in your pocket, it is better to leave those in the hotel. For the rest of the year you have the beach all to yourself and it is very quiet.

The hotel lies on the equator. Therefore, protecting yourself against the sun is very important. You can get seriously burnt in just half an hour time, so be careful.

Opening hours

  • In holiday periods up to 11 p.m.
  • Weekends: until 10 p.m.
  • Weekdays: by appointment, flexible
